The short answer
The 2104D is worth considering if you want a conventional UK-market overlocker with three- or four-thread overlocking, manual setup and a mechanism to help with the lower looper. Brother publishes a stitch-length range, adjustable differential feed and a free-arm/flatbed conversion. The official manual documents the thread paths, adjustments and safety steps.
That is a specification-based case, not a verdict from sewing samples. We did not test the machine, so this review makes no claim that its threading is easy, that it produces a particular stitch quality, or that it is more reliable than another overlocker. Its strongest practical appeal on paper is the combination of a documented lower-looper aid and familiar manual controls.

Who it may suit
The feature list may suit a beginner prepared to learn threading and tension adjustment from a manual. The 2104D offers three- and four-thread overlock stitches, an instant rolled-hem changeover and a free-arm mode for cylindrical areas such as cuffs. The free arm is created by removing the bed extension according to the manual.
It is not an air-threading model and the published material describes manual tension dials. If you want automatic tension, a needle threader or a machine that takes over threading setup, compare alternatives with those exact features rather than assuming that the lower-looper lever does everything.
Threading and controls
Brother describes an easy-to-follow thread guide and a F.A.S.T. lower-looper threading system. The feature is specific to the lower looper; it does not mean that every looper and needle thread is fed automatically. The official manual contains separate instructions for the lower looper, upper looper, right needle and left needle.
The manual also covers stitch length, stitch width, differential feed, presser-foot pressure and thread tension. Treat the manual settings as starting points. Thread type, needle condition and fabric all affect the result, so test settings on a scrap before committing to a garment seam.
For safety, Brother says to switch off the machine when making needle-area adjustments, including threading a needle or changing a needle or presser foot, and to unplug it for cleaning and user servicing described in the manual. Follow the full manual and the rating plate for the exact machine.
Adjustments and stitch options
Brother lists three-thread narrow and wide overlock stitches, four-thread overlocking, narrow hems and rolled hems. The product specification also lists blind hemming, flatlock and pintuck functions with an optional blind-stitch foot. Confirm optional accessories before buying if one of those techniques matters to you.
The official product page gives a 2.0 to 4.0 mm stitch-length range for overlock stitches, 1.0 to 2.0 mm for narrow hemming, and a 5.0 to 7.0 mm stitch-width range measured from the left needle. Brother confirms differential feed but does not publish a numeric ratio in the product details reviewed here, so this article does not invent one.
Accessories and what to confirm
Brother identifies the standard foot, foot controller and operation manual in its product details. The retailer's box list includes several items such as a blind-stitch foot, piping foot, gathering foot, needles, tools, tweezers, dust cover and foot control. Because package lists can vary by listing or offer, ask the seller to confirm the exact box contents for the unit being supplied.
UK price, availability, warranty and support
Brother UK displayed a price of £279 including VAT on its 2104D page when checked on 5 October 2026. The official page directs buyers to “Where to buy”. On the same date, Sewing Machine World listed the machine at £279 and marked it in stock for delivery and collection. This is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of future price or stock.
Brother's UK sewing-machine warranty page states three years of parts and labour from the original purchase date for sewing, overlocker and coverstitch machines. It says business use has a one-year period and sets eligibility conditions, including purchase as the original end-user from an authorised Brother reseller. Check the current warranty terms and keep the purchase receipt. Sewing Machine World describes itself as an official Brother dealer and approved warranty agent; confirm the seller's current status and the exact service route before purchase.
Brother's UK support page directs retail and online buyers to ukcustomersupport@brothersewing.eu and asks them to include the model and serial number. Buyers who purchase from an authorised Brother dealer are also told to contact that dealer for personal support.
Electrical details and limitations
The manual says the machine should be connected only to an AC source within the range on its rating label, and that it is approved only for use in the country of purchase. Its UK, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus guidance specifies an ASTA-approved fuse to BS 1362 if replacing the plug fuse. We do not infer a voltage figure from a US listing or from a retailer's general machine-category text. Check the rating plate and supplied lead on the exact UK unit.
- No hands-on testing was performed, so there are no claims about noise, vibration, learning time, fabric performance, stitch quality or durability.
- The lower-looper aid does not replace the separate manual threading steps for the upper looper and needles.
- The official sources do not give a numeric differential-feed ratio in the product listing reviewed.
- Confirm exact included accessories, electrical rating, seller status, price and stock with the retailer before ordering.
How it fits the UK beginner shortlist
Our three-entry-level-overlocker comparison also considers the Janome 9300DX and Brother 3034DWT using UK evidence. The 2104D is the option in that group with Brother's published F.A.S.T. lower-looper system, but that distinction alone does not establish that it is the best buy for every beginner.
Our US serger and UK overlocker guide explains why model names, electrical specifications, prices and warranties must be checked market by market.
