How we review sergers and overlockers

A machine does not earn a recommendation because it is popular, carries a high commission or has an impressive product page. It must pass a documented evidence process.

Last updated: 26 August 2026

Every assessment carries an evidence label

  • Hands-on tested: the machine has been physically used under a recorded test protocol.
  • Editorially researched: the assessment combines the manufacturer manual and specifications with retailer information, support terms and credible independent user evidence.
  • Specification comparison: the page compares documented features only and does not claim a performance verdict.
  • Reader experience: a clearly attributed reader account, separated from the editorial score and verified where practical.

The evidence gate before scoring

  1. Confirm the exact regional model and whether it is currently supported.
  2. Read the manufacturer specification and operating manual.
  3. Record local price, warranty, returns and service availability with dates.
  4. Check credible independent owner evidence for recurring strengths or faults.
  5. Separate observable facts from judgement and identify unresolved gaps.
  6. Apply the score only when the available evidence supports every scored category.

US and UK reviews remain separate

“Serger” and “overlocker” often describe the same category, but regional products can differ in model number, voltage, plug, bundle, warranty, dealer network and price. Each review therefore declares its market. A machine sold for US power and support conditions is not presented as a UK recommendation, or the other way around, unless the manufacturer confirms the relevant regional version.

How commercial relationships are handled

Affiliate availability does not affect the scoring weights or whether a machine enters the review queue. If a purchase link later earns commission, it will be labelled and the commercial relationship will be disclosed before the link. The Serger Edge will not publish fabricated testimonials, guaranteed results or a hands-on claim without physical testing.

Corrections and review dates

Prices, availability and warranty terms change. Every completed review will show when its commercial information was checked. Material corrections will be recorded on the relevant page. The methodology and editorial direction are overseen by Stephen Igweh.
